WILMINGTON, Ohio — The National Weather Service has confirmed nine tornadoes touched down Tuesday night in Ohio as a strong weather system moved through the southern and central parts of the state.

It adds to an already unusually large amount of tornadoes occurring in Ohio. In mid-April, a report from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said Ohio had 38 confirmed tornadoes in 2024 , the most in the nation.

A report Wednesday from the Storm Prediction Center said two tornadoes were confirmed in Mercer County, as well as two in Paulding County. The tornadoes in Mercer County both were rated as EF-2, which can produce winds up to 135 mph.

Tornadoes also were reported in Darke, Putnam and Jefferson counties, the report shows. The tornado in Darke County was rated an EF-1, which can produce winds up to 110 mph. No details were provided on the other tornadoes.

While the tornadoes did damage buildings, down trees and cause power outages, there were no reports of serious injuries.

However, tornadoes on Wednesday in other parts of the country killed at least three people, two in Tennessee and one in North Carolina, USA Today reports . More than 22,000 people in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and the Carolinas were without power.

Mlive.com reports an EF-2 tornado hit Portage, Michigan, on Tuesday night, causing widespread property damage and power outages. More than 100 families were displaced from their homes.
