A man in his 20s has died following a collision on the N2 between Castleblayney and Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan.

The collision between a car and a van happened at around 6.15am at Moneygorbet near Broomfield.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A male passenger, also aged in his 20s, was injured and has been taken to the same hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A man in his 50s who was driving the van was also taken to Our Lady of Lourdes with non-life threatening injuries.

The road has been closed by gardaí and a technical examination will be carried out. It is understood the road will remain closed for some time.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.
