Following the cancellation of last year's Boston Marathon, the 2021 event won't go on until next fall. 

The postponement and later cancellation of the 2020 Boston Marathon due to COVID-19 was a blow for many. Athletes, fans, and Bostonians alike mourned the loss of an annual favorite, and it looks like we'll be waiting even longer until the next Boston Marathon. 

The Boston Athletic Association officially announced on October 28 that the 125th Boston Marathon would be postponed "at least until the fall of 2021." The event is traditionally held on Patriots' Day in April.

Event organizers don't have a set new date yet, but they are working with their COVID-19 Medical & Event Operations Advisory Group and local, city, and state officials to form a plan for the fall. 

"With fewer than six months until Patriots' Day and with road races prohibited until Phase 4 of the Massachusetts reopening plan, we are unable to host the Boston Marathon this coming April," said BAA CEO Tom Grilk in the press release. "Prioritizing the safety of participants, volunteers, spectators, and community members, we continue to assess all elements of the race, including a potential reduced field size or weekend date."

After the event's cancellation last year, organizers held a 10-day virtual experience. Will the 2021 Boston Marathon meet a similar fate? Only time will tell. 

"We are optimistic that the Boston Marathon will continue its tradition of celebrating the spirit of community and athletic excellence next fall," Grilk said. "We know there will be many questions, and we will look to address them in the coming months ahead."
