Running certainly isn't everyone's preferred choice of physical fitness, but according to Runner's World, it can play a major part in managing anxiety and depression. Marathons and races not only give runners something to work towards, but they also provide a way to measure personal growth. So whether you've been running marathons for years, or just considering the possibility of participating, these Virginia marathons and races will give you many opportunities to challenge yourself!
March 18, Virginia Creeper Marathon
Taking place along the beautiful Virginia Creeper Trail in Abingdon, Virginia, this marathon is a no-frills, scenic race that is 25 miles long. While this might not be the best choice for a first-timer, the cost is much lower than other marathons, with only a $15 registration fee.
April 7, Charlottesville Marathon
This race has something for everyone. You can choose to either run a full marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, or 8k. There is even a one mile Kid's K for young athletes. The course, which starts and finishes on the University of Virginia campus, showcases the most scenic parts of this historic town. Registration fees range from $10 to $100, depending on which race you choose to run.

This event also has a variety of races, and participants can choose from a marathon, half marathon, two-person relay, and four-person relay. April 14, Monument Avenue 10k
As one of Richmond's biggest events of the year, the Monument Avenue 10k has been named by USA Today as one of the top 10 best road races in the country. Drawing an average of 30,000 participants, there is no shortage of activity to take in. If you are interested in seeing a race before actually committing to run in one, this is the one to see. Costumed runners, spirit teams, and live music abound to keep both runners and spectators entertained. The distance is much less than an actual marathon (a 10k equals just over six miles), making this the most user-friendly of all. It is also relatively cost-effective, with fees ranging from $55 to $35, depending on your age.
April 21, Blue Ridge Marathon
Taking place in Roanoke, Virginia, this marathon has earned the title of "America's Toughest Road Marathon" because over the course of the race, runners must face over 7,430 feet of elevation change. The course is along the famously scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, with the finish line ending in downtown Roanoke. The race offers a full and half marathon, as well as a 10k. However, all are invited to participate in the post-race party, where runners will receive medals, and be invited to enjoy live music and local craft beers. Registration fees range from $45 to $105.
