Behind every stylish woman is a closet full of classic, tailored pieces that create the foundation of a wardrobe.

Here are the six items of clothing that have the most classic fit, style, and versatility -- regardless of your personal style and taste. You can build from there.

White button-down

The great thing about a white button-down is, of course, its versatility. This is the perfect outfit builder for any office, and can be paired with pants, a pencil skirt, an A-line skirt, or pretty much any kind of skirt. You can also wear a white button-down with jeans, shorts, jean shorts ... you get the point.

Look for a button-down either in a strong cotton fabric or in something silky. Maybe get both versions depending on the occasion. Make sure it’s fitted, but not too tight.

Tailored pant

A tailored pant is the perfect professional piece. You can wear it with that white button-down you just bought or with an array of any other work-appropriate tops. You can even pair a good trouser with a t-shirt for a more casual event. Pay attention to the cut of the pants and look for an ankle cut pant, because those will hit right at the ankle and will look great with heels, flats, and sandals alike.

Sheath dress

A sheath dress is basically the definition of an effortlessly chic outfit. Pair this form-flattering dress with heels, a dress, a blazer, a cardigan, tons of necklaces, or just one dainty necklace. Any way you slice it, you’ve got an amazing look. And it is a great piece to wear transitionally from work to happy hour. You can also wear a good sheath dress to a date for a classy, romantic feel. Stick to a neutral color for the most versatility.

Fitted jeans

Every wardrobe needs to have a pair of jeans, but while it’s fun to have a distressed pair, a red pair, and a pair in every wash, it’s key that you have a classic pair you know you can pull out any day and rock. This pair may vary based on your body shape and what you think you can match with everything else in your closet. Some will prefer skinny jeans, others boot-cut. What these jeans should all have in common is a quality fit and a classic blue color.

Cotton t-shirt

Just like a white button-down is a necessity for work but could still be worn more casually, the cotton t-shirt follows the same principle -- just the opposite. Pick out a soft, 100 percent cotton t-shirt in a neutral hue. You’ll be able to wear this tee for every occasion of your life. It also makes a great layering piece for when the chillier weather comes.

Neutral pumps

You can style a pair of beige or black pumps with any of the other pieces mentioned in this list, and that’s really the sign of a good wardrobe staple. Search for a basic shape and a heel that isn’t higher than three inches, so you can still walk around comfortably. A good heel adds that extra oomph to any outfit, whether it’s with jeans and a t-shirt, or a tailored trouser and button-down combo.
