In-person or all virtual? That's the big question!

Maryland schools are gearing up to begin the 2020-2021 academic year. Here's a snapshot of how they're doing it across the state.

Use this summary as a starting point for reading more about the detailed return-to-school plans for each county. You can click on the links below to go to the official county websites or follow along with the districts that have active Twitter feeds.

Allegany County Public Schools will begin the fall semester virtually on September 8, using the "Schoology" learning platform.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools will employ virtual learning for the fall semester starting on September 8. An ongoing Chromebook survey is available online for families to request a loaner device if needed.

Baltimore County Public Schools will be 100-percent virtual from September 8, 2020, to January 29, 2021.

Baltimore City Public Schools reopen on September 8 with virtual learning for all.

Calvert County Public Schools are opening with virtual learning, and small groups of students may need special, in-person instruction. Individual requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Caroline County Public Schools are adopting a "Virtual+" model for the first nine weeks (August 24-October 8).

Carroll County Public Schools will reopen on September 8 with an "Enhanced Virtual Learning Model" of instruction. The school system is working toward developing a hybrid model that combines in-person and online learning for their students. 

Cecil County Public Schools are employing a virtual classroom model starting on September 1.

Charles County Public Schools will open with virtual learning in the first phase of a plan designed to lead to in-person classes for all students.

Dorchester County Public Schools are opening in a virtual model with the plan of working up to in-person teaching in a three-phased approach.

Frederick County Public Schools are using the "Schoology" platform for their online learning. Students can check out loaner devices and have access to internet hot spots as needed. 

Garrett County Public Schools start the year on September 8 with virtual learning on the "Schoology" platform.

Harford County Public Schools are rolling out both asynchronous and synchronous online learning for students, as well as a limited-capacity space on campus for students who require special assistance or connectivity.

Howard County Public School System will have a fully virtual first semester from September 8, 2020, to January 28, 2021.

Kent County Public Schools are offering a fully virtual educational experience and are in the process of monitoring the feasibility of a hybrid model.

Montgomery County Public Schools start their academic year on August 31 with virtual learning for the first semester. Officials will continuously examine operations for possible in-person options in the second semester.

Prince George's County Public Schools will employ distance learning for the first two quarters of the academic year.

Queen Anne's County Public Schools will employ virtual learning for the first semester of the year.

Somerset County Public Schools are offering both 100-percent remote learning and a hybrid program that transitions from remote to in-person learning.

St. Mary's County Public Schools began the year with online learning.

Talbot County Public Schools will begin the academic year on September 8 in Phase 1 of a five-phase plan.

Washington County Public Schools will get back to virtual learning on August 31. 

Wicomico County Public Schools begin the fall semester on September 8 with 100-percent virtual learning.

Worcester County Public Schools are opening with 100-percent virtual learning in Stage 1 of a four-stage reopening plan.

 

One underlying theme across the entire state is the emphasis on health and safety. As new trends in the COVID-19 case tracking emerge, expect updates from each school system.
