Located east of Fredericksburg, this beautiful state park offers a variety of outdoor activities perfect for a weekend staycation. Westmoreland State Park is best known for its fossil hunting on its sandy beaches, but there is so much more to do here. If you've ever wanted to try camping, they have cabins, lodges, and campsites all available to reserve online.

Hike along six miles of wooded trails and enjoy the magnificent view of the water from the cliffs. You can even bring your bikes and hit the wooded cycling trail. Kayaks and canoes can be rented all summer, and the fishing pier is perfect for casting your line or crabbing in the Potomac River.

Campers enjoy free entry at the park swimming pool; visitors can use the communal grills and picnic tables. You can hone your campfire cooking skills and tell ghost stories to your heart's content. Firewood is available for sale at the camp store, and the cabins also have wood-burning fireplaces. S'mores all around, even if it's raining!

One of the best things about this park is that pets are allowed in the park and the cabins, so you don't have to leave your four-legged family members at home. This is also a beautiful place to see the leaves turn in the autumn—the cliffs are absolutely stunning with the colors of the fall foliage. Whenever you decide to make the trip out, you should definitely add Westmoreland State Park to your Virginia bucket list.
