I know people steal some pretty weird things, but this theft at a local winery may be a new low.
Someone actually went to Montgomery County’s Firefly Hill Vineyards in the middle of the night and stole an entire grape harvest.
As expected, the owners of the vineyard are absolutely livid. I would be, too.
Most interestingly, it seems that whoever did take the grapes knew what they were doing, meaning they had some inside knowledge of the vineyard’s business and operations. Co-owner Allison Dunkenberger told bhmgnews.com,
“’Whoever took the grapes had to have been someone who knew something about the winery’s operations — the grapes are not visible from nearby North Fork Road. It’s not a cutthroat industry.’”
Maybe this was more a personal vendetta and not a professional theft? The Dunkenbergers believe it was a group of knowledgeable people who conducted the robbery, taking over two tons of grapes. It’s calculated that the loss of the grapes and the equipment used to steal them may have cost the winery almost $50,000.
“’The thieves cut them carefully and quickly," Allison Dunkenberger said.
And it all happened overnight -- between the time Allison Dunkenberger left the winery last Monday afternoon and David Dunkenberger arrived early Tuesday morning. The grapes were there on Monday, but by Tuesday morning, most of them were gone.
I’m interested in knowing whether these thiefs have a winery of their own. Because if they don’t, what are they going to do with that many grapes? They also couldn’t possibly get far with such a large stolen package.
