Saddle Up & Take In Colorado
Despite what you see going on in Denver and some of its mountain towns, our western heritage is still alive and well. You can still get a buffalo steak, you can still carry your antique Colt revolver (check your local laws), and cowboy boots are perfectly acceptable in any setting, so why not go all-out and take in all Colorado has to offer from the saddle? I'm talking, of course, about horseback riding and in Colorado, the options are endless. So saddle up your favorite Appaloosa and trot some of these fantastic trails:
Maroon Bells
Everybody has a photo of Maroon Bells – it's the most photographed location in Colorado – but how many have a photo of them and their horse there? As you might expect, though, Maroon Bells is a heavily traveled trail network and perhaps a challenge for those looking to bring their horse. There are also U.S. Forest Service regulations that horse riders need to abide by, that's why we recommend booking a tour with Maroon Bells Outfitters for a curated, carefree experience.
Weminuche Wilderness
If you really want to get out there and feel like Butch Cassady, load up the horse trailer and head down to the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Located in southwestern Colorado near the towns of Ouray, Pagosa Springs, and Durango, this area is home to some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes. Since it's in the San Juan National Forest, horses are allowed on trails unless marked otherwise. Be sure to follow all rules and regulations including bringing weed-free hay.
Idaho Springs
Need a quick trip? Why not try Hells Hole Trail? Six-and-a-half miles south of Idaho Springs, this motor-free zone is a great place to take in the Aspens, tell some stories, and cook some beans over the fire (fire-restrictions may apply and must be in designated areas). Or if you're more into guided tours, check out A&A Stables, they're known for their historical rides where you'll have the opportunity to learn about the history of the area, check out an old graveyard, or even ride all the way to Central City to try your luck playing craps, pokers, roulette, and more.
Crested Butte
Located near Crested Butte, Irwin Lake is a beautiful lake that's stocked with trout making for the perfect Colorado getaway. It's also a great place to see some of Colorado's wildflowers. So load up the ol' Cimarron horse trailer and head to Crested Butte.
