What started as an experiment in 2016 will now become a reality in 2020.
The city of Denver has recently announced that its plans to expand the two-way bike lane on South Broadway (at 7th Avenue) are moving forward and will now extend farther north across Cherry Creek, ending at Center Avenue. However, in order for this expansion to happen, a traffic lane will be removed to make room for a new bike lane.
This idea first came to be in 2016 when the city added temporary bike lanes, in place of metered parking.
The project is said to cost about $13 million, including a $1 million design phase currently in the works, which will take anywhere from a year to 18 months to finalize. Public input will be accepted through Denver Moves Broadway. Construction should begin in the spring or summer of 2020.
"I think this makes it easier for people to get around, and also everyone can safely get around," said Heather Burke, Denver Public Works, in a statement.
On top of the extended two-way bike lanes, there will also be "complete intersection reconstruction, new traffic signals, as well as new pedestrian ramps," according to Dan Raine, Senior City Planner.
