Rosecroft Raceway will be hosting the Soul, Funk, Jazz Summer Festival and Crab Feast on August 26. The lineup includes international, national and emerging artists. You don't want to miss this!
On August 26, the Soul, Funk, Jazz Summer Festival and Crab Feast promises to be a funky good time. This nine-hour event will feature several bands and artists, both established and up-and-coming, as well some of the best food and food vendors in the state. The event is the brainchild of two area musicians, soul funk jazz independent artist Madz Johnson and percussionist Brian Smith. The two artists wanted to create an outdoor festival that features top quality performances from international and national artists, while also giving back to the community and helping other local foundations in the process.
The festival will be held at Rosecroft Raceway, which is located on 6336 Rosecroft Drive in Fort Washington. Radio and television personalities Cortney Hicks of WBAVA V101.9 of Charlotte, and Timmy Hall and Vic Jagger of D.C.’s Majic 102.3FM will be hosting.
Festival Bands
The all-female R&B female funk band KLYMAXX will be one of the many bands performing. KLYMAXX has long been a staple in dance clubs and on radio since the 1980’s when their ballad “I Miss You” reached number three on the Billboard charts in 1986. The band had another hit in the 1990’s with their song “Good Love,” which reached number four on R&B charts.

Veteran funk band Lakeside will also be performing a few of their original hits -- four of which have cracked the US R&B Top 10 since 1978. On the other side of the coin, the PFunk Connection is certain to bring more funkiness to the festival. The Atlanta-based band is led by former George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic vocalist Patty Walker, who has recorded and toured with Rick James and Bootsy Collins.
Jazz fans are sure to love the music of renowned jazz keyboardist and composer-producer Marcus Johnson, whose album
Poetically Justified reached number 10 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Charts in 2009. Johnson has released 11 solo jazz albums, and his music is described as a combo of funk and smooth urban jazz. The festival’s co-founder Madz Johnson will also perform her original funk, jazz and soul tunes; the Virginia based artist has been on three world tours and has an album due for release sometime this year.
The all-female Jazz R&B, Funk and Soul band Band of Roses will bring their original tunes, known for delivering smooth and powerful vocals backed by some of the area’s most talented and highly trained musicians who come from diverse musical backgrounds. Other artists included in the lineup include Tee Sylk Harris and Chocolate City Live, Metal Roze, Anissa Hargrove, Nia Simmons and Phil French. Between sets throughout the course of the day, DJ Eclipse will keep the party going with his hip-hop, funk and soul mixes.
The Soul, Funk, Jazz Summer Festival and Crab Feast will start at 11:00 a.m. and run until 10:00 p.m., with musical performances beginning at 1:00 p.m. General, music-only admission is $50 and $75 for both the Crab Feast and General Admission. Crab feast tickets include unlimited, authentic Maryland crabs from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., and will resume at 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Special group discounts are available at lower cost -- general tickets include sides and beverage refreshments, while tickets for music-only and music-plus-crab feast are currently on 40 percent discount (for a limited time).
