Mount Vernon is, hands-down, one of the best places in Northern Virginia to watch the autumn leaves turn. Being George Washington's estate, the former plantation also has incredible historic significance. So, it only makes sense to combine the two! Mount Vernon's Fall Harvest Festival -- also known as Fall Harvest Family Days -- is a chance for whole families to take in the fall foliage at Mount Vernon while also experiencing what life was like in the 18th century. While the event is certainly geared toward children, it is also perfect for the kids at heart!
There will be plenty of educational events available for children, including a hay maze, horse-drawn wagon rides, and demonstrations of 18th century dancing and other period crafts. There will even be a blacksmith on hand to demonstrate how Colonial Americans manufactured their equipment, and adults and kids alike will get to take a photo with George Washington himself!
Perhaps the best part is that the Fall Harvest Festival is scheduled right around the area's peak leaf color change, so the estate's trees will have the most color they will have all autumn. Every year, hundreds of visitors flock to Mount Vernon to see the leaves change, just before they fall. So, the estate scheduled Fall Harvest Festival to coincide with that.
It is recommended that you purchase advance tickets, just in case the event fills up before you arrive. The Fall Harvest Family Days festival will run on October 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
