Instead of packing thousands of people into Coors Field, the Rockies will be airing a "virtual game."
If you were one of the many people disappointed that we can't flock to Coors Field and participate in Rockies Opening Day festivities tomorrow afternoon, you're preaching to the choir. Given the current condition of the world right now, though, it's totally understandable.
However, you can still enjoy watching the Rockies through a virtual game that will be aired in place of the rivalry match against the San Diego Padres.
The game airs on Friday at 2 p.m. (MT) on AT&T SportsNet, MLB.com/Rockies, or Rockies.com.
The virtual game, through the use of archived footage of inning-by-inning and memorable moments, will feature everything one can expect from a typical game, including in-game features, pregame ceremonies, a seventh-inning stretch, and more.
This "Stay-at-Home Opener" will also act as an online fundraiser to benefit food banks in both Colorado and Wyoming. Called "Feed the Rockies," fans can make donations at Rockies.com/FeedTheRockies throughout the virtual game.
The Colorado Rockies Baseball Club Foundation will then be matching all donations up to $300,000, with 100 percent of all of the proceeds benefiting Care & Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, Community Food Share, Food Bank for Larmier County, Food Bank of the Rockies, and Weld Food Bank.
Erin Pulling, president and CEO of Food Bank of the Rockies, said in a press release:
“These are unprecedented times for food banks across Colorado and Wyoming. We are seeing a doubling in those who need food assistance as a result of COVID-19, and we are proud to have the Colorado Rockies’ leadership step up to contribute funds to aid in our response. Food banks across Colorado and Wyoming are shifting their operations to better serve the needs of our community, including drive-through mobile pantries and innovative partnerships. We are able to help our neighbors receive food at these difficult times, thanks to community support from organizations like the Colorado Rockies Foundation.”
