When it comes to real estate, Washington, D.C. ranks fifth behind some of the most expensive cities in the country for total rent paid in 2019.
According to a recent report by Zillow, the 2010s were a banner decade for rental properties.
In 2019, D.C. residents paid just $15.1 billion in rent, coming in fifth place after New York ($56.5B), Los Angeles ($39.2B), San Francisco ($16.4B), and Chicago ($15.2B). That's a whole lot of money going to the cities' landlords! Overall, across the country, $512 billion was paid in rent, making this a very lucrative market.
Just for fun, let's take a look at some apartments in D.C. to see how much they go for right now. For the sake of comparison, here are some current listings for studio apartments in different neighborhoods.
Anthology on H Street has a 460-square-oot studio for $1,904 a month. The building has luxurious amenities including a gym, rooftop pool, communal lounge space with billiards tables and big screens, and a fantastic central location.

Want to be on the riverfront? The Channel at the Wharf has a 358-square-foot studio for $1,698 per month.

This simple Cathedral Heights apartment is 457 square feet and only $752 per month. That's quite a bargain for its great location on Wisconsin Avenue.

On the other side of the spectrum, one of the most expensive apartments available is this two-bedroom home in Dupont Circle. For $6,500 per month, you get 1,450 square feet of beautifully renovated living space.
