In a press conference Tuesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser instructed non-essential business to close.

Washington, D.C., plans to order all non-essential businesses to close. In an address on Tuesday, Mayor Muriel Bowser said she would sign an order to shut down nonessential businesses and services not related to emergency responses during the coronavirus crisis.

The mayor gave some examples of businesses to be shut down, including salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, and tanning salons. These will join the already long list of closed businesses. The mayor describes it: “We have virtually shut down economic activity in our city in an effort to contain the spread of the virus."

The city also announced that in-person services at the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, and the Department of Transportation will also cease at this time.

Additional guidelines as well as a time frame for implementing this order are forthcoming and are to be announced late on Tuesday.

The instruction comes after 21 new COVID-19 cases were documented in D.C. on Monday. The total cases in Washington, D.C., number 137. Previously, Bowser had extended social distancing through April 27, ordered restaurants and bars to stop in-person dining, and closed gyms and movie theaters.
