The former Broncos receiver was arrested Wednesday on vehicular assault charges, as well as driving without insurance, following a rollover crash in Denver that occurred earlier this month.

Demaryius Thomas turned himself into police on Wednesday night and is being held for investigation of vehicular assault, driving without insurance, and reckless driving, as reported by the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Vehicular assault is a Class 5 felony under Colorado law, while driving without insurance and reckless driving are traffic misdemeanors.

On February 16, Thomas was involved in a car crash that resulted in one of his two passengers suffering serious, though thankfully not life-threatening, injuries. Thomas suffered minor injuries in the crash. According to arrest records, Thomas lost control of his car while driving 70 in a 30 mph zone, causing it to roll multiple times on Auraria Parkway near 12th Street. Investigators said at the time of the accident that they didn't believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

However, perhaps the biggest question surrounding this investigation is why was Thomas driving without car insurance?

Thomas is an NFL wide receiver, a five-time Pro Bowler, and has career earnings of $70.11 million over nine years, and yet ... he couldn't spend, what, a couple hundred dollars a month for car insurance?? Color us confused.

Although Colorado law requires every automobile owner to maintain insurance on their vehicle, many drivers who cause accidents are uninsured. Or, in other cases, many are under-insured, meaning they don't have enough coverage to pay for all of the injuries caused in the accident.

But in Thomas' case, well, there's really no excuse.

Thomas, a former Broncos wide receiver, was traded to the Texans in the middle of last season. He was then released by the Texans a few weeks ago following a ruptured Achilles tendon injury.
