The family-friendly pop culture convention will return in 2021.
Pop Culture Classroom, the organization behind Denver Pop Culture Con, announced on Monday that it must cancel its 2020 event due to the continued use of the Colorado Convention Center as a temporary field hospital through the end of the year.
"Due to Colorado’s Public Health Order preventing events at the convention center through December, Denver Pop Culture Con 2020 is, unfortunately, canceled," said Denver Pop Culture Con Director Christina Angel in a statement. "We’re profoundly disappointed that we won’t be able to hold Denver Pop Culture Con this year, but the health and safety of our community is our highest priority. We are committed to doing as much as we can to reduce frustration and inconvenience as everyone deals with this unprecedented situation. And in the meantime, we’ll get to work on creating a fantastic event for 2021."
Tickets for the 2020 Denver Pop Culture Con will be automatically refunded, and 2020 exhibitors will have the option of receiving a full refund or credit for the next event. "New ticket on-sale and guest announcements for next year’s show will begin later this year," states Pop Culture Classroom.
Denver Pop Culture Con will return to the Colorado Convention Center on May 14-16, 2021. This year’s convention was originally scheduled for July 3-5, only to get postponed to Thanksgiving weekend before ultimately getting canceled.
"We’re committed to this community and are planning for Denver Pop Culture Con in May 2021," added Angel. "We will continue to focus on our dedication to education and community-building, and we’ll be providing more online experiences and content to help keep our community engaged as we get through this difficult period."
Thousands of artists, cosplayers, students, educators, volunteers, and families attend the convention every year, myself included—it's become Colorado's biggest three-day celebration of all things pop culture.
"Denver Pop Culture Con isn’t just about fandom. It’s a place where we come together and celebrate that which we love," said Angel. "It’s like a family reunion."
This news comes after several other conventions across the country, including San Diego Comic-Con, being canceled due to coronavirus-related issues.
