Two doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore have created their own coronavirus test to help make testing more available in the coming weeks. They hope to be able to test as many as 1,000 patients per day.

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital have developed their own coronavirus test in hopes of increasing the amount of testing available for potential coronavirus patients. Johns Hopkins began testing samples last week.

As of right now, the test takes 24 hours to yield a result, but Dr. Heba Mostafa, one of the doctors on the team, plans to continue development on the test to provide results in a matter of hours.

Widespread testing is a concern that multiple private hospitals are trying to tackle by developing their own coronavirus testing. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, have also created their own test in an effort to help public labs deal with the increasing demand for testing. 

Dr. Karen Caroll, another doctor who helped develop the test at Johns Hopkins, elaborates that with more available testing, health officials can more easily track the virus and better implement contact tracing.

Even though the news of school closures, toilet paper shortages, and altered events seems bleak, this is something that can help us look forward to what the future holds! The addition of more tests and the fact that over half of coronavirus patients have fully recovered should warrant some security in managing the virus.
