Sips and Suppers is an annual two-day event that celebrates the Washington, D.C., community through food and drink. The program’s mission is to fight homelessness, hunger, and poverty in the metro area.

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re interested in participating in Sips and Suppers this year.

A little background:

According to the Sips and Suppers website, the event “began in 2009 as the brainchild of Alice Waters to raise the awareness of homelessness and hunger in the nation’s capital and to promote efforts to develop sustainable and local solutions to these challenges.” Now in its ninth year, the two-day event will be hosted by Alice Walters, Jose Andres, and Joan Nathan. The first day will focus on the sips, while the second will center around the suppers. Many of D.C.’s best philanthropists, bartenders, restaurant owners, top chefs, and prominent members of the community will contribute and participate. Last year, Sips and Suppers was able to raise “over 2.5 million dollars in financing for the essential programs run by these organizations.” [caption id="attachment_6654" align="aligncenter" width="300"]sips and suppers Courtesy of ramw.org[/caption]

Suppers

WHEN: Sunday, January 28 WHERE: In over 35 homes throughout the D.C. metro area COST: $650 per person ABOUT: This is a bit different than the Sips portion, as it’s much more personal, extensive, and gratifying. The concept of "Suppers" is that honored “chefs, working together in pairs, donate their time and skills to participate in these incomparable evenings while hosts graciously provide their houses for the evening. And guests get to watch and chat with the chefs as they prepare the meal. The highlight of Suppers is great food and wine, and stimulating conversation.” This is an incredibly popular event. Each dinner is capped at about 20 people, and almost all the food and wine are donated. Volunteers who host will help serve the meal. During the cocktail course (because cocktails should definitely be a course!), “representatives from Martha’s Table and D.C. Central Kitchen lead discussions about nourishing our health, economy and environment.” View the full list of chefs and their associated restaurants here.
