Don't want COVID-19? Dig into your swim bag for a pair of goggles.
According to the country's leading infectious disease expert, wearing goggles or an eye shield along with face masks may help you against contracting the coronavirus. Dr. Anthony Fauci explained this past Wednesday how he believes both of these items can more completely protect people from getting infected.
In an interview with ABC News, he said, "If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it."
Dr. Anthony Fauci to @DrJAshton: "If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it. It's not universally recommended, but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can." https://t.co/SJPZn8fN6F pic.twitter.com/Ml87aBuclI

He explained that "if you really want perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces" then wearing eye protection could certainly help. Although he says it isn't "universally recommended," he agreed with the suggestion that wearing goggles or other protective eyewear may become a standard suggestion in the future.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have so far suggested that facial masks can reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19, which can enter in through the nose and mouth. It is also possible to become infected with the virus through the eyes. However, no recommendations about covering one's eyes has ever been officially announced.
“You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye,” Fauci said. “Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it.”
As we head into the fall season, things may become even more difficult with both the coronavirus and influenza on the rise. Fauci recommends people get vaccinated against the latter and continue wearing face masks.
