Head coach Jim Montgomery was named the winner of the Spencer Penrose Award as the National Coach of the Year.
On April 26, University of Denver head coach Jim Montgomery will receive the Spencer Penrose Award as he claims the title of National Coach of the Year. This makes Montgomery the fourth DU coach to win the award, following the late Murray Armstrong (1961), Ralph Backstrom (1986) and George Gwozdecky (2005). The Spencer Penrose Award is named after the Colorado Springs benefactor who built the Broadmoor Hotel Complex, which was the site of the first 10 NCAA championships. Montgomery was a finalist for the award last year after he led DU to its first Frozen Four since 2005. Montgomery had this to say of winning the prestigious award,To me, the recognition is recognizing the success of the program this year. It's a team award. If we don't have outstanding student-athletes who are great players I'm not getting recognized for that. In turn, I have to thank my assistants for going out and getting those talented student-athletes and convince them to play at Denver."Montgomery leads the DU Pioneers to a 31-7-4 record, on top of a No. 1 ranking and the top overall seed for the NCAA tournament. The Pioneers are heading to the Frozen Four, which will be held on Thursday, April 6. They're hoping to play for the school's eighth national title in Saturday's championship game.
