From new releases to movie news, find out all the updates we got at New York City Comic Con!
The 2018 New York Comic Con was full of announcements, trailers, and star-studded panels. Here’s just a snapshot of some of the big highlights from the weekend and what you can expect to hit the movie and television scene in the next year. Be warned, though, as some of these highlights may include spoilers.
Updates from the Marvel Universe

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Movie): Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller came onstage at NYCC for a 90-minute panel. Although they were pretty hush-hush about many details of the movie, the two ended up showing the first 35 minutes of Into the Spider-Verse and requested that fans stand up and recite the following pledge: “I promise not to tell any Sony executives that I saw this.” Without spoiling too much, the footage began with an overview of the legendary Spider-Man. Miles Morales is the son of father Henry Jefferson, a cop that is suspicious of the original Spider-Man that has been slinging through New York for 12 years, and who is in no danger of being Uncle Ben’d. However, Miles does have an Uncle Aaron who is the one that gets Miles into graffiti and introduces him to the spider that changes his life. When the Peter Parker in Miles' universe is killed in action, Miles is visited by the 40-year-old Parker of another universe to become partners in crime.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Movie): Con-goers got to see the first 13 minutes of the movie that many didn’t even believe would make it to the big screen. During these 13 minutes, we saw a NASA shuttle blast off with strange anomalies on their radar. The President calls Charles Xavier for help, and the X-men assemble to help get the astronauts home safely. Jean seemingly dies during the mission but somehow miraculously survives. However, it calls into question Charles Xavier’s intentions, and Mystique gives the best line of the scene – “It’s funny, I can’t remember the last time you were the one risking something. And by the way, the women are always saving the men around here. You might want to think about changing the name to X-Women.” X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release on June 7, 2019.

X Force (Movie): During Dave Goddard’s panel for Bad Times at the El Royale, the subject of X-Force came up. He revealed that he is still in talks with Ryan Reynolds about a potential X-Force film featuring a genuine ensemble of Deadpool, Cable, and Domino. He told fans, “I tend to focus very intensely on one project at a time. I sort of am just finishing up Bad Times here. I think once we do that, once we’ve birthed this movie out into the world, then it’ll be time to [figure out] what’s next, and meet with Ryan, and Fox, and Disney, and figure out what makes sense.”

Daredevil (TV Show): The third season of Daredevil will premiere on October 19 and start with Matt Murdock’s miraculous survival from the building that crushed him in season two. The trailer shown at NYCC also reveals the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk as the city turns on the one hero that can save them.

Scarlet (TV Show): During a panel, Jessica Jones writer Brian Michael Bendis hinted that the long-awaited TV show is expected to be a controversial one set in the current political climate. Although he didn’t say much else, he did tell audiences, “I can’t say what network it’s going to be on because of NDAs, but I can say that the network features Shows when it’s Time.” Essentially hinting that Scarlet will air on Showtime.
Updates from the DC Universe
During the next couple of months, DC will be heavily promoting its new streaming service, and fans got a glimpse of what’s expected to air on the DC Universe on-demand app.

Titans (TV Show): The Titans revival will be the centerpiece of the entire DC universe streaming service. At NYCC, con-goers got to see new footage of the show as well as the first two episodes of the series, showing the first glimpses of the team coming together. Former wonder boy Dick Grayson is fresh from his separation from Batman and is about to be thrown into a new crime-fighting team. It’s a very different version of the Teen Titans than the Cartoon Network series aimed at children. This story is for a more mature audience and features a lot more blood, violence, and danger. Titans debuts on October 12 and will also play internationally on Netflix. Even before its airing, NYCC fans also found out that the show is already slated for a season two.

Harley Quinn Animated Series (TV Show): Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco will voice Harley Quinn in a new animated series centered around DC’s infamous baddie, Harley Quinn. During the Titans panel, con-goers got to see a first look into the show that featured Harley Quinn talking directly to the fans. From the quick one-minute teaser, we can see that Harley Quinn isn’t the typical PG-character shown on television up until now, and instead, she’ll be depicted as a comedic, cursing villainess.

Doom Patrol (TV Show): A live-action Doom Patrol is coming to the DC Universe streaming service after its initial introduction on the Titans TV show. Doom Patrol has received 13 episodes and will pick up right after Titans with Cyborg asking the group to take on a mission too odd for the Justice League. The Mummy’s Brandon Fraser will voice Robotman, Jovian Wade will play Cyborg, and Rogue One’s Alan Tudyk will play the villain Mr. Nobody. Although no firm date for the series was given, many fans believe the show will release sometime in April 2019.

Stargirl (TV show): At NYCC, Geoff Johns compared the show to a mixture of Back to the Future and The Karate Kid. Stargirl will feature Courtney Whitmore, a smart and athletic high school teenager that moves from Los Angeles to Blue Valley, Nebraska, after her mom gets married. As she struggles to adapt to a new school and make friends, she discovers her step-father has a surprising secret: he was once the sidekick to a superhero. She borrows the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff and becomes a new generation of butt-kicking superhero. According to Johns at Comic Con, they’re also building a 15-foot STRIPE robot to help Courtney travel to stop villains of the past. The show will most likely premiere in fall 2019.

Swamp Thing (TV Show): Legendary horror visionary and the director of Aquaman James Wan is expected to produce a Swamp Thing TV series on the DC Universe streaming service. Likely arriving on the service in June 2019, Swamp Thing follows Doctor Abby Arcane (played by Crystal Reed) as she tackles a horrific life-threatening epidemic in her hometown. She’ll dive into the realm of horror and supernatural as she explores the creature know as Swamp Thing (played by Alec Holland).

DC didn’t only focus on its streaming service. Many panel guests also discussed much-anticipated future DC movies.

Aquaman (Movie): A brand new five-minute trailer of the highly anticipated film was shown to NYCC attendees. In this extended trailer, we learned more about Arthur Curry’s background and the plot of the movie. We see Aquaman’s mission to obtain King Atlan's trident and stop his brother’s surface war, more footage of Black Manta, Aquaman and Mera in desert ruins, an extremely long fight scene, and the biggest reveal of all: a look at Aquaman’s iconic gold and green suit.

Shazam (Movie): Although Shazam star Zachary Levi held his own panel at NYCC, there wasn’t much to reveal about the upcoming DC movie. However, he did state that he believed Shazam was the perfect role for him and that the movie “is not skewed younger, it’s just infused with it.” According to him, “My character is Captain Marvel, not to get confused with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. So, Shazam is Billy Batson at 14. He’s got a heart of gold, then this wizard sees in him this potential to become Earth’s finest mortal. He gives him the power to say ‘Shazam’ and become, well me! It’s basically the movie Big meets the movie, Superman.” He also revealed that the DCEU incorporated some very dark tones with storylines featuring the death of Superman and the dangerous villain-led mission of Suicide Squad.

Hellboy (Movie): During the movie’s panel, Stranger Things' David Harbour stole the show by saying he would officiate a wedding as the character Hellboy if this tweet got 666,000 retweets. However, the biggest news from the panel came when he showed a brief trailer for his upcoming new movie. Harbour described the film as “a monster movie, right out of Frankenstein,” and the trailer truly depicted that. It’s more of a horror-type film than the previous Hellboy movies as we see Harbour take on the role of the titular demon. The trailer also showcased the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, a lava hellscape, a lot of fighting, and a glimpse of Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen. Hellboy will be revealed to the world on April 12, 2019.

Mortal Engines (Movie): With Peter Jackson on hand, NYCC revealed the first full-length trailer for Mortal Engines. The movie takes place in post-apocalyptic Europe hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event. Now, a young woman named Hester Shaw must join forces with a ragtag team of heroes to stop London from devouring everything in its path. Join her journey as Mortal Engines releases on December 14.

Walking Dead (TV Show): The biggest reveal from The Walking Dead panel was Angel Kang’s confirmation that three departed characters -- Shane, Hershel, and Sasha -- will return in the show’s ninth season.

Deadly Class (TV Show): Produced by the Russo Brothers and based on the 2014 comic book, Deadly Class will introduce the world to a new class of antiheroes – a group of misfit teens whose crime lord parents enrolled them in a prep school specifically for future assassins and murderers. The TV show will feature Avengers: Infinity War’s Benedict Wong, Lana Condor, and Benjamin Wadsworth. Deadly Class will premiere January 16, 2019, on SYFY.

The Umbrella Academy (TV Show): Following on the remarkable trend of schools and academy shows, The Umbrella Academy is about a prep school for death dealers. NYCC attendees got to see some footage of the series and learned about the members of the Academy and some of the superpowers they will use to ultimately save the world. Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige will anchor the TV show, and The Umbrella Academy will drop on Netflix on February 19, 2019.

What We Do in the Shadows (TV Show): Remember in Thor: Ragnarok when Korg told Thor that a three-pronged wooden fork wouldn’t be very useful unless “you were fighting off three vampires that were huddled together”? Well, that’s a reference to director Taika Waititi’s 2014 mockumentary about a group of vampires living together, which is now going to be made into a television series. The audience at NYCC got to see a sneak peek at the pilot episode of What We Do in the Shadows and found it to be a hilarious show adding comedy to mundane life activities. Co-directors, writers, and stars of the original movie Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are returning as executive producers, while the starring roles will be played by Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, and Matt Berry. What We Do in the Shadows will debut on FX sometime next spring.

Archer: 1999 (TV Show): The newest reinvention of Archer was unveiled at NYCC as audiences saw a glimpse of Archer: 1999. In this tenth season, Archer will be sent into space as the captain of the space station, Seamus, and the team will battle traditional sci-fi themes such as space pirates and alien invaders. Audiences will also see Krieger as an android who may or may not be evil and Pam, who Aisha Tyler described as “if the Thing had a really bad case of eczema.” The season is expected to premiere in spring of 2019.

American Dad (TV Show): The cast and crew of American Dad took to the stage to announce that the show has been renewed for two more seasons and that there will be 31 new episodes in 2019.

Family Guy (TV Show): Family Guy has never shied away from an issue, and it looks like they’re not going to stop now. The cast and crew told NYCC that their latest season will tackle estranged children, marriage, death, and a lot of Trump. The season will also start with Quagmire learning that he has a teenage daughter (voiced by Mandy Moore), Meg struggling with an eating disorder, and Stewie learning more about himself through self-discovery.
