More than 700 poets and activists will be on hand when the Split This Rock Festival comes to the Farragut Square neighborhood on April 19.

Known as the District’s premiere poetry event, the Split This Rock festival traditionally brings Poetry Slam, Pulitzer and Pushcart winners as well as up and comers who come together for an event that both showcases the skill and talent of the best wordsmiths and provides a platform on which social issues, political reform, and justice are addressed. Split This Rock has, in previous years, featured the likes of famed novelist and writer Alice Walker and U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrara and 2018’s lineup is stock full of well-established poets who have gained numerous accolades for their work and publications. This three-day festival includes readings, panel discussions, workshops, activism and parties which afford guests the opportunity to network, speak out on social issues and for justice all while celebrating poetry as a vehicle for change as well as entertainment and self-expression.

Poetry Fans interested in attending the event can register online, various options are available from one-day festival access starting at $85 all the way up to the $300 General Registration Fee for the entire three-day event. While Split This Rock will feature many educational forums, readings, and discussions, open mics happening over the course of the three-day event are sure to be the most interesting and enjoyable part of the event. Local restaurant and open mic poetry venue, Busboys and Poets, will be holding open mic events which will be free for registrants of the festival and open to non-registrants via a minimal $5 cover charge. Both registrants and non-registrants should also be sure to catch the festival’s book fair from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 21 at the National Housing Center which is free to attend and open to all. Five venues in all will serve as host to the festival and events, visit Split This Rock’s website to register and learn more.
