The flags will cover more than 20 acres of land on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital will once again play host to a living memorial to people that died from coronavirus. For two weeks, beginning on September 17, more than 600,000 tiny white flags will be placed on the National Mall in remembrance of each person who died from the virus. The exhibition will be designed and created by D.C. artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, the same artist who created a similar display at RFK Stadium last fall.

Each flag placed for the memorial exhibition will have the name, date of death, state, the person ordering the flag’s relation, and a special message. You can request a flag for your loved one by visiting the In America website or plant one yourself when you visit. The display will be open to the public from September 17 to October 3.

The timing of the display is meant to serve as a reminder of the impact it has on Americans who returning to normal without significant people in their lives.

“This fall as employers bring workers back to office buildings and students return to school, it will be too easy to ‘go back to normal’,” said Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg. “But for one in three American families, there is no normal. This exhibit honors all who have died, but it is more than an act of remembrance. In America: Remember, will provide a historic visual reminding us for years to come that being an American means caring for all Americans.

Volunteers are needed to help create flags, plant flags and host the exhibit. Flag planting will begin on September 14 and flags will be inscribed beginning on August 3. If you would like to volunteer your time for any of these activities, go to signup.com.

The In America exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to sunset on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to sunset on weekends.
