This week, we tackle Arya's infamous Mystery Meat Pie and the Grassland's favorite snack, Dothraki Dried Meat.

For the meat pie, I had a few stumbles before coming up with this final version. The limiting factor is the prepared pie crust. It simply doesn't hold up to the meat and potato filling unless you make it a double crust pie in a pan. Trust me on this one.

Arya's Mystery Meat Pie (serves 6)

2 lbs. ground meat of your choice (I used meatloaf mix)
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 cups mashed potatoes*
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 pie crust in a disposable pie tin
2 rolled, prepared pie crusts (found next to the refrigerated cookie dough)
1 egg white, mixed well with 1 tsp. water

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. In a large skillet, brown the meat, add the chopped onion, and cook until the onion is softened. Carefully drain off all of the pan juices. Mix in the mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese, then season it all with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Prick the bottom of the pie crust in the tin and blind bake for 12 minutes. Gently spoon in the meat filling and brush the edges of the crust with the egg white mixture and a basting brush. Top with one of the rolled pie crusts, pressing gently to seal. Trim off the excess from the edges with a sharp knife.

Here's the fun part. Arya, of course, made her pie for Walder Frey so I chose to decorate my pie with the Frey sigil. If you want to try your hand at topping yours with a family crest, visit this GoT fan page for some ideas.

Carefully cut out the sigil you want to use, retaining the extra pieces just in case. Brush the entire surface of the pie with the egg white wash, place the sigil, and brush its surface with the egg white wash as well. Poke a few small holes for steam in inconspicuous areas around the top and bake for 30 minutes. Cool and serve with brown gravy.

*You can use homemade mashed potatoes, instant, or already prepared mash from the deli.

Dothraki Dried Meat (serves 2 on a long voyage)

1/2 lb. thinly sliced meat (I used beef sliced for bracciole)
1 T. soy sauce
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. sugar
freshly ground black pepper

Slice the meat into 1-inch wide strips and marinate with the remaining ingredients for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees (175 if it will go that low) and line a cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper. Lay out the strips of meat so that they do not touch and put in the oven. Prop the oven door open with a wooden spoon. You want to dry the meat, not cook it outright.

Check the meat every 30 minutes, flipping it each half hour. The meat should be thoroughly dry after 90 minutes but you can leave it in longer if you want it somewhat crisp. Store in an airtight container.
