Superhero landing! Visit the superhero exhibit that has flown into the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History.

Educating fans by day and fighting crime by night, the costumes and props of superhero movies/films hold a lot of value to pop culture and modern society. They helped build a story, world, and characters that have gotten some of us through our lowest of times and made others feel as though they can fly through their highest of highs. These artifacts have certainly become a part of history and therefore are being showcased at the Smithsonian Museum of American History from now until September 2, 2019.

Straight from the colorful pages of a comic book, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's superhero exhibit features some of the world's most infamous costumes, comics, and props. As you walk onto the bottom floor of the museum, you’ll immediately become taken aback by the massive Batmobile in the middle of the room. After you're done gawking, turn right and you’ll transport yourself to a world of superheroes like you’ve never seen before.

The first part of the exhibit, called “Costumes and Merchandise,” showcases the Man of Steel’s costume from the 1952-1958 television show, The Adventures of Superman. Worn the first time Superman flew onto television sets, this costume is an iconic piece of superhero history.

As you explore the rest of the "Costumes and Merchandise" exhibit, you'll also find the sharp claws worn by Hugh Jackman in X-Men Days of Future Past, Cap’s weathered shield from Captain America: Winter Soldier, the Dark Knight’s infamous cowl and Batarang from Batman and Robin, and the sexy costume worn by Halle Berry in X-Men: Days of Future Past. 

With comic books emerging in the 1930s, their stories have intertwined with our own and become our past, present, and future. Therefore, the second half of the Superheroes exhibit features comic books from past decades that will take you on a journey through some of your favorite heroes’ dark and mysterious pasts. You’ll find the original comic art for Captain Midnight, Batman, and Wonder Woman set against some of the newer Daredevil, Birds of Prey, and The Avengers comics. 

The superhero exhibit is quite small and won’t take you long to explore. However, while you’re at the Museum of American History, you should also check out some of the other cool movie and music props hidden throughout the building. Click your heels together three times and find Dorothy’s iconic ruby red slippers, then make your way backstage to gaze at Steve Aoki’s modern DJ equipment. Around the corner, you will also find a costume from The Handmaid’s Tale, which was interestingly filmed right at the National Mall.

As you wander the halls of the Smithsonian Museum of American History, you’ll geek out, fanboy out, and fall in love with some of its pop culture exhibits. So be sure to visit the museum before the superhero exhibit flies away.
