Looking for something new to watch?

Try Lovecraft Country if you're into horror, sci-fi, or action-packed thrillers. Currently streaming on HBO, the series is based on the novel by Matt Ruff. The 2016 tale resurrects creations from the sci-fi works of H.P. Lovecraft and blends the world of the supernatural with the terrifying backdrop of segregated cities in the Jim Crow era.

With executive producers like Misha Green, J.J. Abrams, and Jordan Peele, you know you're in for quite a ride. Each episode can almost stand on its own, but to do it justice, you should start at the very beginning. Get to know protagonist Atticus Freeman (played by Jonathan Majors) and his cohorts Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance).

Unless you've read the novel, you have no clue what to expect, so just open your mind and grab your popcorn. Lovecraft Country airs a new episode on HBO every Sunday at 9 p.m. EST. Keep the kiddos away; it's absolutely splattered with gore, adult language, and nudity.

Spoiler alert: Letitia is the strong female character we all need right now, and I predict baseball bats will be big this Halloween. Check out this creepy new series this weekend! If you don't have HBO yet, you may want to wait until the end of the first season and cash in a free week's trial period.

Sarina Petrocelly
Born in Laos but raised in Haiti and South Florida, Sarina developed a taste for international cuisine at an early age. Now in Woodbridge, VA, she likes to explore the area for the best authentic dives, freshest local produce, and downright yummiest meals in the DMV. When she’s not out with friends or family, she's home with her musician/artist husband Tony and their Jindo, Hachi. She enjoys cooking and finding activities that can drown out heavy metal guitar riffs.
