Whales are passing through the area as part of their annual migration!

Local resident Robert McMillen was fishing off of Fort Story this week when he and some friends spotted humpback whales breaching in the waters.

Because Virginia Beach sits right along the whale migration route, it's not unusual for humpback whales to pass through the Chesapeake Bay area in the winter months (generally, December through March). But you definitely have to be in the right place at the right time.

Take a look at these incredible photos:

If you're interested in getting a glimpse at this magnificence yourself, a number of whale-watching boat trips are available to be booked. In the meantime, if you do find yourself near the water, keep your eyes peeled for one of nature's most amazing displays.

Have you ever seen a whale off the coast of Virginia Beach? We'd love to hear your experiences and see your photos in the comments!
