Music fans can immerse themselves in workshops, demos, and live performances all weekend long.

Washington, D.C., is one of the cultural capitals of the world, especially when it comes to music. So come on and celebrate the unifying force of music with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival!

Every year a lineup of amazingly diverse musical acts descends onto the National Mall for performances all weekend long. Here's a sneak peek of this year's schedule (hint: it's gonna be lit):

Grandmaster Flash

Saturday will host a concert from rapper/spoken-word artist Ruby Ibarra, Chicano rock band Quetzal, and hip-hop artist and D.C. native Goldlink, as part of the festival's showcase titled "The Fierce Urgency of Now: Modern Troubadours, Poets, and Wordsmiths." Food vendors will be there, so grab a bite to eat or drink before the show!

On Sunday, catch a family-friendly tribute to Pete Seeger featuring appearances from Sonia De Los Santos, Claudia Zanes, and delightful children's groups The Bright Siders and You Are My Flower fronted by Elizabeth Mitchell. The festival will close out with a genre-defying set from the hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash.

The festival also wants to honor music's cultural impact and their rich histories. Throughout the weekend, visitors can partake in free workshops and demos offered during the event. Learn about the craft of music preservation through digitizing tapes, and creating music "zines." Browse records from local record labels including D.C.'s Carpark Records, Dischord Records, Lovitt Recordings, and more. Kids can interact in music-making workshops and enjoy a special storytime event from the D.C. Public Library. You can view the full schedule of events here.

Wondering how to get there? We know parking in D.C. can be tough, so we recommend taking the Metro if you can. The Smithsonian, along with the L'Enfant Plaza and National Archives stops, will get you within close range to the festival. Find out more here.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival will be taking place Saturday, June 29, 2019, and Sunday, June 30, 2019, from 12 to 10 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the National Mall. Admission is free.
