After decades of planning and construction, Luray Caverns is now 100-percent step-free. There are no more stairs to maneuver at this amazing state landmark!

Anyone who has ever taken a trip to the Luray Caverns will remember the long staircase down at the entrance. Those steps have now been replaced with a graduated walkway that extends from beyond the original entrance directly to the subterranean attraction. The work to accomplish this began decades ago and has been done in such a way that the caverns have not been compromised during the construction.

Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more. Student discounts are also available when group visits of 15 or more are coordinated by the school. If you have a Giant card, you can also get 50 percent off your second adult ticket when you purchase one at regular price.

Just because the stairs are gone doesn't mean this isn't a difficult tour for those with mobility issues, however. The entire length of the walkway is just under a mile and a half long. People who may need assistance can bring wheelchairs, but there are still steep sections that will require a bit of help.

Know Before You Go

• You don't have to book your tickets online; simply buy them at the welcome center when you arrive.
• The temperature underground is in the mid-50s, but it will feel like it's 65 degrees with some humidity. Dress in layers and include a light jacket if you tend to get cold.
• There can be slick spots inside due to the moisture in the caverns. Wear comfortable shoes with rubber soles.
• Outside food and drink are prohibited inside the caverns. You can purchase refreshments on-site at the snack bar.
• There is a free picnic area if you decide to pack a lunch for after your tour.
