Why play the lotto when there’s free cheese out there just waiting to be won?

Lidl, a German-based grocer with locations in Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, is rewarding Norfolk resident Katie Markle with one year’s supply of local cheese for creating the “World's Greatest Cheese Board.”

“Congrats to our National Cheese Day Sweepstakes winner, Katie M. of Norfolk, VA! Katie’s stylish board earned her a Lidl gift card for a year’s worth of cheese,” Lidl posted on Facebook. “A special thanks to all the ‘grate’ submissions we received!”

“I love how food can help your taste buds travel without ever actually leaving the comfort of your home,” Markle told WTKR in response to her win.

On May 30, Lidl created the submission-based contest to celebrate National Cheese Day. The company dubbed the event the “2018 Lidl National Cheese Day Sweepstakes.” Anyone 18 or older was eligible to participate (if they lived in one of Lidl’s six states, that is).

To enter, contestants were asked to follow @LidlUS on Instagram or Lidl US on Facebook and submit an electronic image of a “Lidl Cheese Board.” Participants were then asked to upload their image to Instagram or Facebook, tagging Lidl US.

“Entries will be judged on imagination, construction, uniformity in food styling, and overall design,” Lidl said. “Winning entries will be determined by the Sponsor in its sole discretion. Odds of winning a prize depend on the number of eligible entries received. The Winner will receive one year’s worth of cheese in the form of a Lidl Gift Card in the amount of One Hundred Eighty-Six Dollars and Sixty-Two Cents (USD $182.62).”

According to WTKR, Markle’s board (pictured in the Facebook post above) featured a variety of cheeses that are offered by Lidl, including its Preferred Selection Spanish Goat Cheese and Preferred Selection Italian Asiago Stagionato.
