Planning Your DC Vacation—Where You Should Stay

If you're planning a trip to the nation's capital and don't have a clue about where to stay, we've got you covered! Here are some great ideas at all different price points.

Washington, D.C., is a wonderful place for a vacation because we really do have it all: historical landmarks, gourmet food, Broadway shows, and incredible museums. Add in the different types of nightlife, and you've got a bit of a quandary when it comes to finding a hotel. There are four general options: luxury hotels, boutique hotels, Airbnb, and staying across the river.

Luxury Hotels

D.C. does luxury VERY well. My top picks for luxury hotels are The Jefferson, Willard InterContinental, Four Seasons, and The Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown. These are the places where you'll be treated like royalty, or at the very least, popular aristocrats. You don't even have to leave the hotel to find a gourmet meal, afternoon tea, or spa service. If you can afford it, have at least one night or two at one of these D.C. gems.

Pros: Excellent service, great food, and amenities abound.
Cons: Parking will cost you a fortune.

Boutique Hotels

You have to do your homework if you want to try one of the city's boutique hotels. Each one is unique in its decor and themes. Going for historic and romantic? You'll want to stay at Morrison-Clark Historic Inn and Restaurant. Craving the fun of Adams Morgan with a decidedly hip atmosphere? Head for The Line Hotel.

Pros: Less expensive but still uber-comfortable; innovative food created by star chefs.
Cons: Parking is still pricey.

Airbnb

Airbnb is one of the best options for DIY, seasoned travelers. You don't really need much more than a place to sleep at night and a kitchen to make your breakfast, so go for the best location you can afford. Being near a Metro station is a must. Neighborhood street parking in D.C. is often restricted by zone, and keeping a rental car is just a hassle.

Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, and Capitol Hill are all great locations that are both close to Metro and highly walkable. Huge pockets of the city roll up the sidewalk at night, so make sure you find something near at least 3–5 restaurants or bars for a livelier neighborhood.

Pros: You get more space, laundry facilities (usually), and a kitchen.
Cons: Street parking is iffy at best, and you may end up in a boring part of town if you're not careful.

Staying Across the River

While this may seem a bit drastic, staying across the Potomac River in Northern Virginia can be an excellent option for families and folks on a budget. You have more options for low-priced hotels near Metro stops, and you can often get free shuttles to the airport.

My favorite luxury hotel would be The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, because of its great location, fine dining, and proximity to shopping, nightlife, and sightseeing in Arlington.

Pros: More affordable options are available in Northern Virginia.
Cons: You're not actually in D.C.
