Planters will have a funeral for the legendary mascot during the Super Bowl game.

There is some sad news to report from the land of peanuts. Mr. Peanut, the 104-year-old mascot for the Planters nut company, has died in a car accident. Fans are invited to join the survivors of the accident at a memorial service scheduled to air during the third quarter of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, February 2, 2020. Ahead of the memorial service, the Planters Nutmobile will be traveling around giving fans a chance to pay their respects.

Snippets of the video of the last moments of Mr. Peanut’s life have been posted on several social media sites. According to the video, Mr. Peanut was traveling in the Nutmobile with actors Matt Walsh and Wesley Snipes, when he swerved off a dangerous canyon road. The video shows Mr. Peanut heroically dropping from an overloaded tree branch in order to save his friends. 

“MR. PEANUT was more than just a friend—he was a hero. His passing has shook me to my core,” said Matt Walsh. “I’ll do my best to honor his legacy and be there for my friends like he was always there for me even until our last wild ride together. I’ll pay my last respects during his funeral on Super Bowl Sunday. I encourage our entire nation to do the same.”

Mr. Peanut was created in 1916 by a child in response to a newspaper contest. The peanut in a top hat was a large part of the company’s marketing for more than 100 years.
