The interactive art exhibit "celebrates Black women and their hair."

The Black Hair Experience is coming to the DMV area. Co-founders Alisha Brooks and Elizabeth Austin Davis created the one-of-a-kind exhibit in Atlanta, using photography and graphic design to make a unique interactive experience that "combines a pop-up art exhibit and a series of Instagrammable spaces, all in the name of celebrating Black hair," according to WUSA.

Brooks told WUSA, "We kept getting all kinds of comments and emails saying ‘Where are you going next?’" The DMV, she says, "was our most requested area."

Maryland recently passed the CROWN Act, (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), "a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists or Bantu knots." The message that "all Black hair is beautiful," Brooks told WUSA, "still is relevant today and we really wanted to impact this area."

Brooks and Davis wrote on their website, The Black Hair Experience, that they wanted the exhibit to pair "the nostalgic moments of our culture with affirmations of self-love." 

And while Black hair has been highly politicized, with many Black women experiencing "traumatic ... hair journeys," the Black Hair Experience wants to serve "as a sanctuary where Black women can feel safe and celebrated," and to highlight a shared hair journey. Over a dozen art installations, ranging from "the inside of a beauty salon to a huge ball pit filled with big orange hair rollers," evoke shared nostalgia. And most importantly, say Brooks and Davis: "No matter where you are in your hair journey there is something in our exhibit for you ... One of the things that me and Alisha always say about when we were growing up, was that we didn’t really see ourselves in places, nor did we see ourselves celebrated. Representation matters."
