Say What? The DOE Recommends Keeping Your House Temperature at 78 Degrees, Minimum

The Department of Energy says that to save money on your energy bill, you should hike up your thermostat and keep your house temperature warmer.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is making a ludicrous recommendation to save you money on your atrocious energy bill by setting your thermostat to shockingly high temperatures while you are home, sleeping, and away. While their heart is in the right place, their minds, however, are not.

Here is what they recommend: 78° F when you’re home (what?!), 85° F when you’re at work or away (still too high), and 82° F when you’re sleeping (nope).

I. Am. Laughing.

Before you get all bent out of shape, keep in mind that you will save three percent on your energy bill for every one degree you bump the thermostat up. So the DOE is only trying to help you with maximum savings.

However, they must not live in an area with high humidity because the sweat under my chin and everywhere else says otherwise.

Also, this has been an extraordinarily hot summer for the entire nation, so this might not be the best time to tell Americans to suck it up.

I do love a pretty penny back in my bank account, but I would rather shovel out an extra $20 bucks just to not suffocate. I think almost everyone can agree with me.

Here is what we recommend:

Get a smart thermostat! They will save your life, seriously. You can set it to a schedule so that it automatically changes the temperature for you while you are away from home or sleeping. There is a major bonus. If you get the right one, you can sync it to Alexa so she can change the temperature for you and tell you what the thermostat is set to. Set your thermostat to a temperature you are comfortable with while you are home and sleeping. I, personally, leave it at 67-70 degrees so it's nice and cold and I have an excuse to curl up with a blanket.

When you are away, set your thermostat to 80 degrees or higher if you wish because this will preserve energy during your eight-hour workday. No one is home and using the AC, so why would you need it at a normal temperature?

Last but not least, purchase a big fan to put in every room so you stay super-cool and refreshed. This helps, seriously.
