The Senior PGA Tour, known as the Champions Tour, this year has a tour stop in the Baltimore area as the Senior Players Championship will be hosted by the prestigious Caves Valley Golf Club outside of Baltimore. It is one of the tour’s five “major” championships played every year, which will bring the some of the world’s biggest names to the region. The Senior Players championship is the third of five “majors” during the tour's year-long season and has a purse of $2,800,000, with the winner taking home upwards of $420,000. The defending champion this year is Germany’s Bernhard Langer, who is looking to capture his fourth consecutive Senior Players title and who, just last month, won the Senior PGA Championship at Trump National in Virginia. Meanwhile, Vijay Singh of Fiji will be looking to bounce back from his narrow defeat at last month’s Senior PGA Championship, where he held the lead going into the final round but was unable to hold off Bernhard Langer. Other notable names in the field include the eccentric John Daly, who won his first title in over in ten years earlier this year and his first on the Senior PGA tour; the flashy Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez; former champions Kenny Perry, Mark O’Meara, Fred Couples, Jay Haas and countless others. The 2017 Senior Players will mark the fifth time the Senior Players Championship has been contested in the state of Maryland, from 2007-2009 Baltimore Country Club hosted the event, while, in 2010, TPC at Avenel Farm in Potomac was host. In all, twelve courses have hosted the championship since 1983 when Miller Barber first won it at the Canterbury Golf Club in Beechwood, Ohio. Caves Valley Golf Club, meanwhile, is ranked among the nation’s best. Renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio designed the par 71, 7,005-yard course, which also hosted the 2002 U.S. Senior Open as well as the LPGA tour’s 2015 International Crown. The Championship title has been won by many legendary players, including the late-great Arnold Palmer who won back-to-back titles is 1984 and 1985. Only defending champion Bernhard Langer has won the event three consecutive years. Langer is also the Charles Schwab cup champion -- the year-long points race that identifies the best player on the Senior Tour each year. A victory at the Players Championship would greatly boost his efforts to retain the cup again this year. Regardless of what happens in this year’s Championship, the weeklong event will bring to Baltimore the best players on the Senior Tour and a worthy champion. Tickets for the event are now on sale and can be purchased via the Senior Tour’s website. Daily grounds passes are $20 and weekly grounds passes are $70. Active and reserve military members, retirees and dependents receive free admission. Kids aged 18 and under also receive free admission when accompanied by a ticket holding adult. Free admittance only provides access to the grounds; kids six and older must have a ticket to enter hospitality venues and the Clubhouse. Pavilion tickets are also available and provide access to a shared and open aired venue with views of the 17th tee and 18th fairway. Pavilion areas include televisions and table seating where food and bar service is available for purchase.
