Both cited a lack of early-season snowfall and warm temperatures as the reason for waiting to open.
Skiers and boarders looking forward to the fresh powder at Winter Park and Steamboat will have to wait a few more weeks. Both ski resorts pushed back their opening dates due to little early snowfall this year.
Winter Park Resort was originally set to open on November 18. In an announcement on social media and its website, the resort now anticipates opening no earlier than November 30.
After careful consideration, we have decided to push back the opening of our 20/21 winter season originally set for 11/18. Based on current information we anticipate opening no earlier than 11/30, but that is subject to change. We can’t wait to welcome you when the time is right. pic.twitter.com/9ewbLpMrRw

"The impacts of the East Troublesome Fire on Grand County, home to Winter Park, combined with public health guidelines and restrictions have made this decision necessary and the right thing to do," the announcement stated. "It is in the best interest of all to allow time for more terrain to open to have more space for skiers and riders on the mountain and within resort facilities."
Steamboat Resort cited similar explanations for pushing back their opening date to December 1. They hope that the extra time will allow them to make more snow and open more acreage to comply with their mitigation plans. They were originally set to open on November 21.

As we head into the second half of November, incoming snowstorms are sure to bring plenty of white powder to help ski areas open with more acreage.
Like other Colorado ski areas, Winter Park and Steamboat are working to ensure their guests stay safe and healthy during their visit.
