The department received 614 name suggestions from the community.

The Frederick Police Department asked for the public's help last month naming its new K-9, a 15-month-old Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd crossbreed.

The pup now has a name: Bosch.

The department said it received 614 name suggestions, and it was a "ruff decision" to choose the perfect name. In Dutch, Bosch is an old spelling of a word meaning "forest" or "woods," the department said.

Bosch, who was born November 30, has been acclimating to his new home with his partner, Officer Ian Austin. He will be introduced to the public on May 15 at the department's annual Fishing Clinic and DIY Day.

The department asked only that the suggested names be one or two syllables and not be violent or offensive.

We were curious what other K-9s in Colorado are named. Here's what we found:

  • The Parker Police Department has two K-9s. Rico, a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois crossbreed like Bosch, is a narcotics detection dog. Rico is a Spanish name meaning "Brave Ruler." Parker PD's second K-9, Kato, is a drug detection dog. Kato is a name typically meaning "all-knowing" or "wise."
  • The Castle Rock Police Department has one K-9 named Shogun, a Dutch Shepherd. Shogun is a Japanese name signifying high military rank.
  • The Boulder County Sheriff's Office has five K-9 officers: Duke, Halo, Sapper, Scout, and Vulcan. Duke, Halo, and Sapper are Belgian Malinois. Vulcan is a German Shepherd and Scout is a bloodhound.
  • The Auraria Campus Police Department has an explosives detection dog on its force. Jet, a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Dudley Lab mix, conducts searches when the ACPD receives calls about suspicious packages or unattended backpacks. He also helps at high-profile events that require protective sweeps.
  • The Denver Sheriff Department has six K-9 officers: Rue, Kuko, Karma, Koda, Bolo, and Buddy, who is a Black Lab. These dogs perform sweeps at the county's Vehicle Impound Facility (VIF) looking for dangerous or illegal items.

What name would you choose for a K-9? Tell us in the comments.
