New Autism Awareness line is designed around sensory needs.

Vans announced a new line of shoes last week. The new line is designed to include sensory inclusive elements to cater to the unique needs of those who live with autism. Vans worked with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards when designing the shoes to address common sensory sensitivities.

A portion of proceeds from the autism line will go toward benefiting A.skate Foundation, an organization dedicated to using skateboarding to help autistic kids learn acceptance, as a form of therapy, and education. Vans has pledged to donate a minimum of $100,000 from the line to the nonprofit organization.

The shoes focus on the areas of sight and touch and are designed with a calming color palette. Working to make shoes that are more inclusive to common sensitives, the shoes feature soft colors, soft textures, special messages on the backs of each heel, and most are designed as easy slip-on shoes. There are two toddler versions that have Velcro to allow for the shoes to be adjusted to the perfect fit.

From an official press release:

“Since 1966, Vans has stood as a champion of individuality and self-expression. The brand’s commitment continues with the release of sensory inclusive footwear designs as part of the Autism Awareness Collection. With this project, Vans celebrates the unique aspects of all people. Designed specifically with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mind, the ultra-comfortable footwear collection is offered with sensory-inclusive elements including a calming color palette and design features that focus on the senses of touch, sign and sound.”

Vans Autism Awareness line has shoes for every age group from toddler to adult. The line has been designed for enhanced comfort, and the shoes all use the new ComfyCush technology, the Autism Awareness ComfyCush Slip-On utilizes a new softer, cushiony outsole that feels like walking on a cloud. Featuring a co-molded construction of foam and rubber for the perfect combination of both comfort and grip.” From the product description.

The new Vans line also has autism awareness t-shirts, which include a long- and short-sleeve version. The collection is currently on sale online, shoes run from about $45 to $70, and the shirts start at $24.

The new lines are super cute and truly look very comfortable. It is amazing that companies like Vans are working to help people who suffer from disabilities like autism. Those on the autism spectrum often experience a lot of sensory difficulties and finding clothes and shoes that work can be challenging.

We love the look of these new shoes, how about you? Do you know of any other autism-focused footwear or clothing lines? Let us know in the comments.
