Throughout June, view original work by artists and catch exclusive events all over D.C.

When we think of the arts, we usually picture fancy black-tie galas and paintings with million-dollar price tags. And while that's definitely a thing, some of the coolest art events are also free. D.C.'s By the People is doing just that – making art accessible to the people!

Started in 2018 by the nonprofit Halcyon, this festival celebrates the power of creativity and the ways art unites people of all backgrounds. Visitors can catch stunning art installations and hear from artists in engaging panels and talks. Events will be hosted all over D.C. along with parts of Virginia and Maryland. Primary event hubs include Union Market and the Georgetown Waterfront. Last year's festival brought in 26,000 people, and we're sure this year will be just as big!

Here are some of the things planned for 2019's festival:

Talks from local artists including Martha Jackson Jarvis, Kahlil Joseph, and Rania Hassan, who will discuss their career and work with By the People.

The By the People x Monochrome Collective Art Fair, where local artists will display their work for the public. Browse the unique visions of over 50 artists or support them directly by purchasing one of many unique pieces!

Stop by Union Market for the unveiling of its new performance space specially-made for the event! Shop hand-crafted goods from local artisans, and be sure to stay for the surprise pop-up shows!

By the People will also coincide with the Smithsonian's exclusive Saturday Solstice celebration on June 22, which honors summer solstice with late-night museum fun. Swing by the Arts and Industries Building for a funky shin-dig featuring installations, pop-ups, music, and more!
