The African American Museum announced that visitors do not need to reserve passes ahead of time to visit on weekdays in September!
The African American Museum has been an amazing addition to the National Mall since it first opened up in 2016. The museum educates visitors about "powerful moments in African American history, culture, and community." The museum has been such a great addition that it can seem almost impossible to get into! It has welcomed over 3.5 million visitors since they first opened and have used reserved timed entry passes to help manage the large flow of visitors. Following the museum’s “Walk-Up Wednesdays” in April, they have announced “Walk-Up Weekdays” in September. “Walk-Up Wednesdays” were so successful that the museum extended the program into May.
According to the website, “Timed entry passes will not be distributed for weekdays (Mondays – Fridays) in September and will only be required for Saturdays and Sundays, September 1–2, 8–9, 15–16, 22–23, and 29–30, 2018. Walk-up entry in September is a continuation of a pilot to test no-pass entry.”
Now you can see the museum without having to wake up early in the morning to reserve tickets or wait in the long lines every day at 1 p.m. for the limited number of walk-ins accepted. Just walk right into the museum and enjoy the exhibits.

The museum will still limit the number of people who enter the museum on a first-come, first-serve basis so consider waking up early for your visit! You will still need timed-entry passes if you are with a group of 10 people or more.
The museum has said they are not getting rid of timed-entry passes altogether yet and are using the walk-up days to determine how to manage visitor demand. Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the museum, stated back in April on Walk-Up Wednesdays, “We are honored and humbled to have struck such a chord with our visitors. They stay an average of four-and-a-half hours on weekdays. We don't want to disappoint our visitors by reaching capacity and having them wait in long lines for space to become available inside the galleries. The goal of this pilot program is to provide greater access for the public while maintaining the safety and security of our visitors.”
