When it comes to burger chains, Coloradans are living in the golden age. With In-N-Out going on a building spree around the Colorado Springs and Denver areas, prompting hours of lines to get some of the good stuff, the market seems pretty ripe for more options.

And the latest burger chain to set its sights on Colorado is likely to be met with hordes of customers when it opens its doors.

Whataburger, a Texas-based fast-food franchise, is coming back to the state. Planning documents submitted to the City of Colorado Springs show that the chain is planning on building its first location at Federal Drive and Rampart Hills View. The location is in the InterQuest Marketplace fairly close to the In-N-Out site.

This marks a heralded return of the cult-favorite burger franchise. It actually had a few locations in the Denver area for years in the '70s, but those were closed, and people were left to fend for themselves in the hunt for a good burger, among the other tasty offerings of the chain.

In addition to submitting planning documents, the restaurant chain confirmed in a statement that it is indeed making a Colorado comeback.

“Whataburger is growing, and we have more good news. It’s true we are planning to bring our iconic burgers and exceptional customer service to Colorado Springs. We'll have more information to share in the future, but we have some great fans in Colorado Springs and we hope they’re as excited as we are.”

If things go well, the Colorado Springs Whataburger location could be open as soon as this fall. A training center has also been announced for Colorado Springs. Additional locations are set to be added in 2022.

Whataburger has more than 800 locations across the country. There is no word, at this time, of any potential locations in the Denver area, but if the chain follows In-N-Out's plans, it's only just a matter of time for more sites to be announced.
