This weekend you'll have the opportunity to reach for the stars in a WWII B-17.
It's not every day that you'll have the chance to set foot on and take a flight tour in an iconic WWII-era B-17 bomber. But this upcoming weekend, May 5-6, you'll have the opportunity to do just that! And it's all thanks to The Liberty Foundation. The B-17 Flying Fortress is only one of 12 planes in the world that's still operational and is part of a select few that tours the nation, according to the foundation's website. "This airplane acts as a catalyst for many veterans to share their story," John Shuttlesworth, a pilot for The Liberty Foundation, told CBS Denver. [gallery type="rectangular" size="large" ids="36577,36576"] The B-17 was one of the most common types of aircraft used in WWII. "B-17 flying fortresses are the iconic bomber of WWII," he said. "Think (of) what it was like for some 18-year-old to be crawling around on this airplane." Shuttlesworth and his team tour all around the U.S., giving both ground and flight tours to the public.
For $450 (per person), you can take flight in the B-17. But, if you're like me, and you're absolutely terrified of heights, then you can also view the plane from the ground. All you've got to do is give a donation of any dollar amount.
Flights are hosted in the morning, while tours are hosted afterward.
The public is given complete access to the B-17, with seating only required during takeoff and landing. Passengers are allowed to sit in the glass nose of the aircraft, too.
And those who served in World War II are given free flights.
