A 2-year-old boy who fell from the 15th floor of a Maryland apartment building survived and is being treated for a broken arm and other non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at a high-rise in White Oak, about 11 miles north of Washington, D.C., the Montgomery County Department of Police said in a news release.

Police and fire-and-rescue personnel responded to a building on Oak Leaf Drive shortly after 2 p.m. following reports that a child had “fallen from a balcony and landed in bushes 15 stories below.”

Responding officers located the young victim and transported him to D.C. Children’s Hospital. The boy was found alert and conscious, officials said, according to local ABC affiliate WJLA.

Doctors noted the toddler’s injuries included “a broken leg and multiple internal injuries,” but said the boy is expected to survive.

On Friday, police confirmed the incident was being investigated by members of the department’s Special Victims Investigations Division.

While no criminal charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon, police said detectives will continue to investigate what may have contributed to the fall.
