Carlyle House

Stroll through Old Town and over to the house of John Carlyle, one of Alexandria's founders! The beautiful, stone mansion was built in 1753 and is now open to the public for enjoyment. Wander through the 18th-century style, 3/4-acre garden, take a tour of the house, or learn how the house was used as a Civil War hospital in the 1800s!

 

Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site

When you step foot onto this historic site, you'll learn more about the Civil War than you ever covered in history class! Fort Ward was originally a site for the Union Army during the war, and now it has been converted into a museum. Watch re-enactors show what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the time, and uncover how the Union occupation of Alexandria forever changed the city.

You can go on special tours of the tavern, attend lectures, or participate in hands-on and living-history activities.
