With mountains, deserts, plains, lakes and plenty of picturesque small towns, it's no coincidence that our beloved state is host to some Hollywood frames in some big-time films. Here are five famous films that were filmed in Colorado:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Most likely influenced by University of Colorado alumn Robert Redford, this cult classic and western staple was shot almost entirely around Durango, Silverton, and Telluride. With the gorgeous views and vast scenery, it makes sense why this one was filmed in Colorado!
Dumb and Dumber
If you've seen the film, then you know this one was definitely filmed in Colorado! However, what you may not realize is that there is more in the movie than just Aspen. Production was also set in Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and Estes Park.
Vanishing Point
Yet another cult classic! If you're into vintage Mopar, counterculture, and some serious driving stunts, then this is a must-see! The chase begins in Denver and continues west through Nevada. The best thing is: no CGI! That's all real driving in a real 1970 Dodge Challenger (except in the last scene, which can't be spoiled – it's actually a Camaro).
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The revered 1989 flick is yet another one filmed in Colorado. The picture follows Indiana Jones as he fights Nazis in the quest for the Holy Grail, and the backdrop can be credited to locations around Pagosa Springs, Alamosa, and Cortez, just to name a few.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Remember Clark Griswold's hilarious and reckless quest to find the perfect Christmas tree? That's just outside of Breckenridge!
