In the Beginning
Originally meant to be an experiment, Greeley was founded in 1869 with the goal of becoming a utopian community that prized religion, education, agriculture, and family values. It was first known as the “Union Colony”, but the name was later changed to honor founder Nathan C. Meeker’s editor, Horace Greeley, of the New York Tribune.
