The Rise will look a little different from the team that reached last year’s PVF Championship match, with outside hitter Symone Abbott, middle blocker Marin Grote, middle blocker Alyssa Jensen and outside hitter Erika Pritchard serving as the only players back on the roster in 2025. MacKenzi Vazquez, who was the team’s director of volleyball operations, will also take the court as a setter this season. Abbott, a Northville native, Jensen, a former Holland Christian and Michigan State All-American, and Vazquez, an All-American at the University of Michigan, are three of the Rise’s current players with Michigan ties, joining Ali Bastianelli, an All-American middle blocker at Marysville High School, Paige Briggs-Romine, a state champion outside hitter at Lake Orion, Carli Snyder, a state champ and Miss Volleyball winner at Macomb Dakota, and Jena Otec, a former assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. The 2025 roster will also include four players selected in the 2025 Pro Volleyball Federation Draft: middle blocker Raven Colvin, opposite hitter Naya Shime, setter Camryn Turner and libero Elena Ogilvie. Colvin, the daughter of former NFL linebacker and Super Bowl champion Rosevelt Colvin, comes to Grand Rapids following a stellar four-year career at Purdue, where she earned Second Team All-American honors in 2024. Shime was a Third Team All-American at Southern Methodist University this past season, and Turner received the same recognition for her 2024 campaign at Kansas. Ogilvie was part of a Stanford team that reached the national quarterfinals in the 2024 NCAA tournament. With its fifth pick in the 2025 draft, the Rise selected Farmington Hills Mercy graduate and 2019 Michigan Miss Volleyball winner Jess Mruzik, and while the the Penn State All-American isn’t expected to join the team this year due to other contract obligations, the team retains her PVF player rights for two seasons. Among Grand Rapids’ other offseason signees were opposite hitter and former Greek League MVP Sherridan Atkinson , setter August Raskie , libero Valeria Leon and opposite hitter Kaleigh Nelson, who returns to the professional ranks after a 6-year hiatus. While head coach Cathy George is back on the bench, her staff features some new faces, including three assistants that come to Grand Rapids following stints as collegiate head coaches. Mike Gawlik, who spent the last nine seasons atop Central Michigan’s women’s volleyball program, will serve as the Rise’s associate coach, while assistants Jason Oliver (seven seasons at Toledo) and Matt Jennings (13 seasons at Michigan Tech) are also moving up from the college ranks. Rounding out the Rise’s coaching staff is assistant Katie Gawlik, who spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at CMU. Click here for the Rise’s full roster .
