It's May again, which means that Mother's Day, one of the more important holidays of the year, is upon us.

Place that order for flowers yet?  Unfortunately, we pride ourselves on being habitual beings, especially on Mother's Day.  So, here's a list of great things you could do with mom this year. At the very least, it'll be different from what you did last year. 1. Take her to see Macbeth. In a world beset by civil war and invasion, Macbeth and his artful lady begin a series of murders, plunging us into the darkest night of the soul. Storms rage, fires burn and night blankets the earth in this tale of sound and fury, accompanied by Shakespeare’s richest poetry.  Sounds awesome! The play is performed by The Shakespeare Theatre Company located in Chinatown, 610 F St. NW, Washington, D.C. 2. Treat mom to a spa. The Hotel’s Spa and Fitness Club invites mothers to take a day for themselves during the month of May for a well-deserved Mother’s Day Time Out. The Time Out package is a half-day retreat that features a full body pampering experience that is tailored just for her. The relaxing half-day escape includes: An 80-minute Revive and Renew personalized massage, a 50-minute Tata Harper Intensive Results Facial, and two and half hours in the three-level, 12,000 square foot Fitness Club that features a two-lane saline lap pool, whirlpool, state-of-the-art equipment,  sauna, steam rooms, and relaxation space with complimentary fresh fruit and refreshments. There is also complimentary five-hour valet parking.  The Spa is at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown, 2800 Pennsylvania Ave,  NW Washington D.C.

The theme for Mother's Day should relate to art, food, or relaxation.  You can't go wrong with any of those.

3. The first lady of song: Ella Fitzgerald exhibit. The voice of Ella Fitzgerald could inspire an entire museum to itself.  Her songs serve as vital artifacts of American history as one of the country’s most important art forms: jazz. The National Museum of American History dedicates an exhibit to Fitzgerald this spring, showcasing the incredible talent and accomplishments of one of the greatest performers to ever live.  Located at the National Museum of American History 14th St. & Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

4. Visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts. On the occasion of the museum’s 30th anniversary, explore 110 years of archival photos that track the building from its earliest days as a Masonic Temple, to movie theater, and finally to its dramatic renovation into our world-class museum. Located at the National Museum of Women in the Arts 1250 New York Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.

Have brunch at the Blue Duck Tavern.  The restaurant is considered an urban oasis in the heart of our nation’s capital. Enjoy seasonal cocktails, tempting martinis, and an extensive wine list, with many hand-picked pours by the glass. There is plenty of comfortable seating and “Capitol Hill” glass-enclosed booths create an intimate gathering spot.  Located on 24 & M Street Northwest, Washington D.C. 6. Mother's Day weekend at Mount Vernon. Stroll through Mount Vernon's magnificent gardens in bloom. Lady Washington will give lavender sachets to all mothers (while supplies last). If you need inspiration for a Mother’s Day present, The Shops at Mount Vernon have everything from gourmet gifts to gardening accessories as part of the Mount Vernon Historic Plant & Garden Sale. Enjoy a tour of the Mansion through the eyes of Martha Washington's granddaughter, Patty Peter, who recounts her many fond memories of times spent with her grandparents at Mount Vernon. Located at  3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon, VA. This special tour is offered Saturday, May 13, and Sunday, May 14 at 1:30PM. What are your plans for mom this Mother's Day?
