When show-and-tell goes horribly wrong. One young Denver student brought a gun to summer school
Police have reported a Denver student who brought a gun to John Amesse Elementary School in northeast Denver to show it off to his fellow students.
Another student brought the weapon to a teacher's attention and the gun was quickly confiscated. Police were also called to the school to handle the situation. The children were participating in a nonprofit summer school program called Scholars Unlimited. The programs director sent a letter home to student's parents to smooth over the dangerous situation.
"I would like to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students is our No. 1 priority at Scholars Unlimited... As a reminder to all students, it is never OK to bring weapons of any kind- real or fake-- onto school property. Please take this opportunity to review safety messages with your students and encourage them to always report anything that doesn't seem right to a school staff member."The letter also urges parents to check their kid's backpacks more throughly to assist in preventing them from bringing dangerous objects to school. Although, this writer suggests a more obvious solution to children bringing guns to school: keep your guns out of reach and/or out of sight from your young children. That, coupled with proper education of gun safety and understanding that you don't bring something like a gun to school, should already be taught to your children if you have a gun in your home.
